Tokyo Olympics Delayed To July 2021

Tokyo 2020 organization committee president Yoshiro Mori said he had a phone call with International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach today and it has been agreed that the Tokyo Olympics will be rescheduled and now held July 23rd to August 8th 2021 – exactly one year later than originally planned.

The new dates were decided from among several proposed time frames to avoid major conflicts with the international sports calendar and to minimize the logistical challenges faced by organizers.

The news comes around a week after the announcement of the games’ postponement which broke when veteran International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound revealed the news in an interview. The IOC shortly after confirming the delay.

Numerous countries have indicated they will not be sending athletes to the event should it have taken place in Summer 2020 as it remains unclear when the global coronavirus panedemic will be settled enough for international travel again.
