Paramount Pictures has announced that its winter feature hit “Sonic the Hedgehog,” is coming home a little early and will be available for digital purchase on March 31st followed by a more regular disc and VOD rental in the more regular May 19th window.
To date the film has grossed $306.7 million worldwide after five weeks in release and is one of the latest crop of theatrical releases heading into homes as theaters nationwide have closed for safety during the coronavirus crisis.
Both “Sonic” and “Bloodshot” are doing more traditional standard Digital HD purchasing (ie. $19.99 to own), whereas many of the others like “The Invisible Man,” “The Hunt,” “Emma” and the upcoming “Trolls World Tour” are doing premium VOD which has already been rebranded as ‘Home Premiere’ according to iTunes. Those films are going for $19.99 for a 48-hour rental.
Several of those have seen key personnel involved in the film participating in live tweets of their respective projects. “Emma” actor Josh O’Connor (@JoshOConnor15) live-tweeted his film via #EmmaOnDemand, “The Hunt” director Craig Zobel (@craigzobel) and producer Jason Blum (@jason_blum) are doing their’s tonight via #TheHuntMovieAtHome, and “The Invisible Man” writer/director Leigh Whannell is doing his via the hashtag #TheInvisibleManAtHome later tonight too.
