If there’s a story that defines this week beyond the whole viral pandemic craziness, it’s the “Cats” butthole saga.
On Tuesday night the hashtag #ReleaseTheButtholeCut began trending after “Cats” was made available on Digital HD and a reported friend of a producer on the film revealed that the film’s VFX artists had the job of removing approximately 400 shots of computer-generated anuses from the adaptation before it hit cinemas.
Things then took another turn when a VFX crew member, wishing to remain anonymous, spoke with Ben Mekler and clarified things saying “there were never shots of cats with butt holes, or at least by design, none that I saw anyway. However, there were a dozen or so shots where the skin and fur simulation was groomed or just folded in a way that really REALLY looked like very furry lady genitals and buttholes by accident.”
As a result, the task fell on the VFX crew to paint out the offending articles where it was spotted. They added that “daily reviews were constant awkward discussions of people plucking up the courage to point things like this out; ‘does that look like a fanny to you?’.”
Things don’t end there. Vanity Fair subsequently reached out to Universal response, and they got one. Along with calling it their “favorite email of ALL TIME,” they said they can’t comment on the rumors but “Hopefully that will add to the magic and mythical nature of the cinematic treasure.”
A spokesperson for VFX company Mill Film which handled much of the work and said due to NDAs they can’t discuss it, but also dubbed it their “favourite email of 2020”.
