After languishing for many years in development, the film adaptation of PlayStation and Naughty Dog’s video game franchise “Uncharted” looks to be actually happening.
Actor Tom Holland is taking on the role of treasure hunter Nathan Drake, the 23-year-old “Spider-Man” star playing the game’s character younger than he’s been portrayed in the games which has been across his thirties.
As a result, Sully is also going younger too with 48-year-old Mark Wahlberg taking on that role. The age gap is almost spot on (Sully is 25 years older than Nate) and should they be playing their actual ages, then events of the film are set about seven years before the first game and a year or two after Sam’s ‘death’ in prison.
Speaking with IGN this week, Holland says he’s aware people think he’s too young for the part and says that’s part of the point. Those involved aim to avoid the pitfall of most game-to-film adaptations by not simply re-telling one of the games:
“I read the newest draft of the script on the way over here and it’s one of the best scripts I’ve ever read, like it really, really jumps off the page. I think what Uncharted offers that most video games films don’t is that it’s an origin story to the games. So if you played the games, you haven’t seen what’s going to happen in the film. And if you haven’t played the games, you’re going to enjoy the film because it’s information that everyone else is getting at the same time. But I’m super excited to make that movie and it’s been a long time coming.”
Ruben Fleischer is directing the film from a script by Rafe Judkins and Joe Carnahan. The film was targeting a December release this year but has been pushed back to March 5th 2021.
