The “Tomb Raider” game series has seen two reboots over the twelve major titles released so far with the seventh through ninth and tenth through twelfth titles serving as two trilogies separate from each other and mostly from the six that came before (one title was a remake).
The first of the most recent trilogy, the plain titled “Tomb Raider” in 2013, was a major overhaul and reboot of the franchise and served as the basis for the 2018 film reboot of the property with Alicia Vikander in the lead role.
You would expect then that the second game of the current trilogy, “Rise of the Tomb Raider,” would be utilised for the sequel to Vikander’s film currently in the works. It would make sense as ‘Rise’ has drawn the best reviews of the whole franchise, even making it to Time Magazine’s 50 Best Video Games of All-Time list.
Now, a new report at GeekVibesNation (via CBR) reveals the surprising rumor that the second film will instead skip ahead and borrow story elements from the last of the current trilogy – 2018’s “Shadow of the Tomb Raider”. Though it scored good reviews, it is considered the weakest of the current trilogy which makes its potential use surprising.
That game saw Lara mostly in South America, traversing tropical jungles and trying to stop paramilitary organization Trinity from finding the legendary lost city of Paititi and unleashing a Mayan apocalypse upon the world.
The site says filming will begin in April ahead of a March 21st 2021 release. Filming will take place across a number of countries, including England, South Africa, Finland and China and the alleged tone will incorporate more of the supernatural elements of the game as opposed to the first film which kept things fairly grounded.
Ben Wheatley is helming the new film from a script by Amy Jump.
