Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis (“The Walk,” “Back to the Future”) is in final negotiations to direct a new film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic novel “The Witches” for Warner Bros. Pictures and ImageMovers.
Based on the 1973 novel, the story follows a seven-year-old boy who has a run in with real-life witches. The work was previously adapted in 1990 with Anjelica Huston as the head witch. The Zemeckis version will reportedly be more rooted in the original source material.
Zemeckis will also pen the script while Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro and Jack Rapke will produce. producing. Del Toro has long been attached to direct, but a scheduling conflict has seen him vacate the chair.
