Waltz’s Blofeld Won’t Return For Next Bond

Actor Christoph Waltz has confirmed that he will not be reprising the role of long time Bond nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the upcoming twenty-fifth James Bond feature.

Citing “tradition,” the actor tells Italian movie site Talky Movie (via BMD that someone else will tackle the role: “No, I’m sorry. I’m really sad, but that’s the tradition, that there is a new…name. Sorry. I would’ve liked to.”

Since he was first revealed to Bond in “You Only Live Twice,” Blofeld has never been played onscreen by the same actor twice, the changing faces put down to the result of plastic surgery to hide his identity.

Donald Pleasance, Telly Savalas and Charles Gray played him as the lead villain in three of the films (‘Twice,’ “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” “Diamonds are Forever”), while John Hollis subsequently played him but was seen only from behind in “For Your Eyes Only”. Max von Sydow took on the role in the unofficial spin-off “Never Say Never Again”.
