The upcoming “The Conjuring” spin-off film “The Nun” is expected to open to an estimated $36-45 million in its wide release this Friday.
The first film of the fall season, the title could very well top the $42 million opening of the original 2013 “The Conjuring” which remains the franchise’s best. Advance ticket sales are already reportedly well ahead of both “Annabelle: Creation” and “The Conjuring 2”.
The Corin Hardy-directed film won’t come close to matching the earth-shattering $123 million opening of “IT” which opened this weekend last year. Warners has scheduled the sequel to that film, which just finished filming today, for the same slot in 2019.
“The Nun” is also going day-and-date in many overseas territories, a different pattern to the usual staggered release plans of the franchise. The only other film opening domestically this weekend is the Jennifer Garner-led action thriller “Peppermint” which is on track for a $10-13 million opening.
