Actor and martial artist Joe Taslim (“The Raid,” “The Night Comes for Us,” “Fast & Furious 6”) will play the superpowered ice-shooting fighter Sub-Zero in the new live-action adaptation of the video game “Mortal Kombat” for New Line.
The game follows a massive roster of character fighters from different realms in a fictional universe battling for supremacy. Sub-Zero has a long-running rivalry with fellow fighter Scorpion, and Taslim marks the first casting deal for the project.
Greg Russo penned the current version of the screenplay while commercial director Simon McQuoid makes his debut here. James Wan and Todd Garner will produce the project which will shoot in southern Australia later this year.
The game series has sold over 49 million copies and the recent “Mortal Kombat 11” became the most successful launch in franchise’s history. Paul W. S. Anderson helmed a previous film adaptation in 1995.
