Both “Mortal Kombat II” and the second weekend of “The Devil Wears Prada 2” are set to duke it out for the top spot at the box-office this weekend.
The game adaptation pulled in $5.2 million domestically in preview screenings on Thursday night. That’s about on par with Warner’s “Final Destination Bloodlines” last year – that film turned a $5.5 million preview haul into a $51.6 million opening weekend.
As of Friday night, both films are tipped to gross somewhere in the $40-42 million range domestically for the three-day weekend following ‘Kombat’ snagging $12.3 million (sans previews) and ‘Prada’ taking in around $11 million on Friday.
While ‘Kombat’ is debuting, the ‘Prada’ sequel is in its second weekend, with its drop looking to be in the 45-48% range – an excellent result and on par with the original film, which fell 46% in its second weekend.
The Mother’s Day holiday is expected to draw crowds for several titles, with both “The Sheep Detectives” and “Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard & Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D)” debuting even as “Michael” is still going strong.
“Michael” took in $9 million on Friday and is expected to have a third weekend of around $35 million. “The Sheep Detectives” pulled in $3.7 million (including previews) on Friday and should debut in fourth with $13.6 million for the weekend.
The James Cameron-directed “Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard & Soft” concert film will come in fifth with $7.5 million following a soft $4.2 million Friday (including previews) start. Considering its bigger budget than most concert films due to the various 3D tech employed, it’s not great numbers.
