A bunch of first photos are out of “The Maze Runner” star Dylan O’Brien in “American Assassin” at CBS Films and Lionsgate. Director Michael Cuesta helms the new action thriller and potential franchise launcher based on author Vince Flynn’s novels.
This will be based on the first of fifteen novels Flynn has penned about CIA black ops and counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp (played by O’Brien). In the film he is a new recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton).
The pair are enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together they discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.
Stephen Schiff (“The Americans”) penned the script while Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler are producing with filming currently underway in Europe. The project is O’Brien’s first film in the wake of months of recovery from a serious car accident on the set of the third “The Maze Runner” film.
