Metacritics Top Films Shows Games Of 2018

With all the films opening in 2018 now out in U.S. theaters, has unveiled what films, games and TV shows were the best of the year based on the aggregate scores of the top critics.

I’ve divided the lists into three sections – films, TV shows and major video games. Check out the scores below:

Best Films

This list does NOT include old film re-releases (like “Amazing Grace” and Orson Welles’ “The Other Side of the Wind”). Films also have to have over ten reviews to be considered, which is why some high scoring works are not included.

1. “Roma” – 96/100
2. “Minding the Gap,” “Shoplifters” – 93/100
3. “The Rider,” “They Shall Not Grow Old” – 92/100
4. “Cold War,” “The Favourite” – 91/100
5. “Burning,” “The Tale” – 90/100
6. “Eighth Grade,” “Zama” – 89/100
7. “Black Panther,” “Death of Stalin,” “Leave No Trace,” “Museo,” “Paddington 2,” “Shirkers,” “A Star is Born” – 88/100
8. “Bisbee 17,” “Can You Ever Forgive Me,” “Hereditary,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “Sweet Country” – 87/100
9. “Happy as Lazarro,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” – 86/100
10. “First Reformed,” “Support the Girls,” “Tea with the Dames,” “Won’t You Be My Neighbour” – 85/100

There’s also a tally of the movies most frequently mentioned in individual film critics year-end Top Ten lists. On that front the Top Ten were: “Roma,” “First Reformed,” “Burning,” “The Favourite,” “Eighth Grade,” “If Beale Street Could Tal,” “Shoplifters,” “Black Panther,” “Hereditary” and “A Star Is Born”.

Best TV Series

The reviews for shows on the site are often for the first few episodes of a season, and so aren’t as reliable overall as the film scores:

1. “Atlanta: S2,” “Planet Earth: Blue Planet II” – 97/100
2. “America to Me: S1” – 96/100
3. “The Americans: S6,” “The Staircase: S1” – 92/100
4. “Big Mouth: S2,” “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling” – 90/100
5. “Dear White People: S2” – 89/100
6. “Better Call Saul: S4,” “My Brilliant Friend: S1” – 87/100
7. “The Deuce: S2,” “The Handmaid’s Tale: S2,” “Howards End” – 86/100
8. “Legion: S2,” “GLOW: S2,” “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: S2” – 85/100
9. “A Very English Scandal,” “Insecure: S3” – 84/100
10. “Barry: S1,” “Homecoming: S1,” “Killing Eve: S1,” “Random Acts Of Flyness: S1,” “Sorry for Your Loss: S1” – 83/100

There’s also a tally of the shows most frequently mentioned in individual film critics year-end Top Ten lists. On that front the Top Ten were: “Atlanta,” “Killing Eve,” “The Americans,” “The Good Place,” “Barry,” “Pose,” ” Better Call Saul,” “Sharp Objects,” “Succession” and “The Good Fight”.

Best Video Games

Scoring for games on the site is something of a mess as episodic releases, DLC add-on packs and iOS games are often given their own scores. To keep the list reasonable, I’m sticking to full game releases only – no episodic content or DLC add-on titles:

1. “Red Dead Redemption 2” – 97/100
2. “God of War” – 94/100
3. “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” – 93/100
4. “Forza Horizon 4” – 92/100
5. “Celeste,” “Dead Cells,” “Sonic Mania Plus” – 91/100
6. “Astro Bot: Rescue Mission,” “Dusk,” “Into the Breach,” “Monster Hunter: World” – 90/100
7. “Owlboy,” “Tetris Effect” – 89/100
8. “The Banner Saga 3,” “Return of the Obra Dinn” – 88/100
9. “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey,” “Iconoclasts,” “Marvel’s Spider-Man,” “Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom,” “Subnautica” – 87/100
10. “Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age,” Football Manager 2019,” “Unavowed,” “Yakuza 0” – 86/100
