Lionsgate Snags Emmerichs Moonfall

Lionsgate has acquired the North American distribution rights to “Independence Day” and “The Day After Tomorrow” helmer Roland Emmerich’s new sci-fi disaster epic “Moonfall” with production to begin early next year for a 2021 release.

Emmerich, Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen penned the film in which a mysterious force that knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it.

With mere weeks before impact, and against all odds, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love and risking everything to land on the lunar surface and save our planet from annihilation.

Emmerich, coming off the surprise success of his WW2 action feature “Midway” which Lionsgate just released, will also produce.
