IMAX has announced it is teaming with Lochmann Filmtheaterbetriebe to open the world’s widest IMAX screen, beating the previous record holder in Sydney, Australia.
The new screen. which is in Leonberg in south-west Germany, will reportedly be 38 meters wide and 22 meters high. That puts it ahead of Sydney’s record holder which narrower at 35.7 meters wide, but taller at 29.57 meters tall and greater in surface area.
The Sydney screen is undergoing renovations and is expected to get bigger so the German record may not be held for long. The German screen is set to open in 2020 and continues their recent momentum with ten IMAX theaters open or contracted to open.
