In a completely unexpected turnaround, this week’s “The Angry Birds Movie” sequel has broken a record it was not expected to come close to. “The Angry Birds Movie 2” is now, officially, the best-reviewed movie ever based on a video game according to Rotten Tomatoes.
With nearly three dozen reviews counted, the film holds a 79% positive score – well above its next nearest competitors with “Detective Pikachu” (68%), “Tomb Raider” (52%), “Rampage” (52%) and “Mortal Kombat” (46%). It’s also well above the first “Angry Birds” which pulled in just a 44% positive rating.
The genre has become notorious for yielding bad films to the point that it is seen as a cursed genre that even celebrated directors have failed at. That said, the RT rating score only measures likeness rather than love. That’s better measured by the average rating score which comes in at a pitiful 5.63/10. This suggests “The Angry Birds Movie 2” is not a winner by any means – just not egregiously bad.
“The Angry Birds Movie” grossed over $350 million at the box office despite the poor reviews. The new film is said to be on track for a $17 million opening domestically.
