Bad news for fans of British royal drama “The Crown”. Netflix has announced that its prestige series will wrap with its fifth season, one season shorter than the original six-season plan by creator Peter Morgan.
Netflix put out a statement from Morgan claiming the shortened run was a creative decision, saying: “now that we have begun work on the stories for S5 it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop”.
Netflix also confirmed reports that Imelda Staunton will take over the throne from Olivia Colman as Elizabeth II in the fifth season. Probably factoring into the shorter run is the series’ extravagant expense and that the recent third season didn’t hit with quite as much impact as expected.
The series is currently in production on its fourth season which moves the narrative to the 1980s, and the fifth season is expected to end with the turn of the millennium.
