Half a year ago, back when the well-reviewed “Crawl” hit cinemas, filmmaker Sam Raimi suggested he had some ideas regarding the future of the “Evil Dead” franchise and we’d have to wait a while before he could share more.
Raimi and star Bruce Campbell’s last forays into that world were the Fede Alvarez-directed 2013 film reboot and Starz’s “Ash vs. the Evil Dead” series which ran for three seasons.
With “The Grudge” reboot now in cinemas, Raimi is back out on the press circuit and sadly the famed filmmaker doesn’t have much in the way of new news about the status of another film beyond an obvious desire to do one and that something is in the works right now. Speaking on Reddit, he offered this update:
“Bruce, Rob [Tapert] and I are working with a young filmmaker who is writing a new ‘Evil Dead’ story that he will direct. As for me… I would love to direct a new ‘Evil Dead’ movie… but I’d really like to do it with Bruce. And he says he’s retired the character. I hope not.”
Whether this new one will tie back into the 2013 reboot or the old ones or be something else again is unclear for now, but at least Raimi concedes the franchise still has some life left in it.
