Michael Montemayor (“Tangled”) is reportedly writing the first draft of a live-action original movie based on the Greek myth of Medusa at Disney.
Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks production company is developing the project under its deal with the Mouse House.
Medusa was one of the three Gorgon sisters and the only mortal one. With snakes for hair, her appearance was so hideous that anyone who looked upon her was turned to stone.
She was famously beheaded by the Greek hero Perseus, that story portrayed in both the original 1981 “Clash of the Titans” and its 2010 remake, albeit with very different takes on Medusa.
Specifics of Montemayor’s take are being kept under wraps but is said to be a unique take on the Greek myth figure.
The Roman poet Ovid did a more tragic variation on the myth centuries later which had Medusa was originally a beautiful maiden cursed with her looks for desecrating the temple of Minerva/Athena after being seduced by Neptune/Poseidon.
Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Matt Smith are producing.
