Nicolas Cage indicates that both a sequel to “Face/Off,” and his potential involvement in a fifth season of HBO’s “True Detective,” are looking unlikely.
Back in August last year, Cage was rumored to be in talks to star in the next run of “True Detective” but there have been no updates since that point.
Speaking with Variety this week while out promoting Amazon’s “Spider-Noir” series, Cage says he has ‘no idea’ if it’ll happen and hasn’t closed a deal either way:
“I think they’re working on the material, but I haven’t heard about it in quite some time. I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking. I like Issa López a lot, and would be thrilled to work with her, but nothing is concrete. And I’ve never seen the first season of True Detective, but I’ve heard great things.”
The fifth season is supposedly set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City with production originally slated to begin later this year. It’s unclear if that’s still the case.
Cage was also asked for an update about what’s going on with the proposed “Face/Off” sequel. That project had Adam Wingard slated to direct but then he dropped out a while back. It sounds like with his exit, the project is on much shakier ground:
“Adam and I had a great lunch together at the Smoke House in Burbank, and we had a terrific conversation. We share similar interests. I like what he’s been doing with the “Godzilla” group, and we talked about one of our favorite supervillains in the old Godzilla movies, which was Hedorah. I’m sure at some point our paths will cross again. I don’t know what happened, and I have zero idea if it’s going to happen. I’m the last guy to know anything.”
Wingard was linked with the project for around five years and then exited back in February. At last reprot, the sequel has now converted into an open directing assignment at Paramount Pictures with other filmmakers allowed to pitch their own take.
