Joseph Mawle (“Game of Thrones,” “Birdsong”) has scored a lead role opposite Will Poulter and Markella Kavenagh in the mega-budget “The Lord of the Rings” TV series for Amazon Studios.
The high-profile fantasy series hails from writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay and director J.A. Bayona. The story is set in Middle-earth and explores new storylines within the second Age, preceding the events in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Fellowship of the Ring”.
It is believed Mawle will play the series’ lead villain, Oren, opposite Poulter’s young hero Beldor and female lead Tyra (Kavenagh), but Amazon is not confirming details about any of the characters.
Amazon Studios, Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema are producing the series which is in the midst of pre-production ahead of a shoot in Auckland, New Zealand in coming months.
