Microsoft’s Xbox division has big plans to expand beyond the gaming sector and into entertainment following the recent wave of successful film and TV adaptations of video game franchises.

In a new feature piece at EW about the company’s plans touches upon a number of screen adaptations in the works.

The biggest reveal is that a live-action film based on the live-service title “Sea of Thieves” is in the works. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” director Destin Daniel Cretton will produce the film via his Hisako Films label.

The 2018 title sees players explore an open world via a pirate ship from a first-person perspective. They encounter each other during their adventures, sometimes forming alliances, and sometimes going head-to-head. It had attracted more than 40 million players by April 2024.

There’s also an update on the live-action “Gears of War” film, from director David Leitch and writer Jon Spaihts, with the story of that being: “the origin story of Delta Squad, a ragtag crew of soldiers who wage a desperate war for survival against the Locust.”

Also on the way are Netflix animated series based on “Gears of War” and “Minecraft,” a live-action “Wolfenstein” show at Amazon, and a “Fallout Shelter” reality competition series which is now filming.
