Jon Favreau’s highly anticipated photorealistic CG reimagining of Disney’s “The Lion King” is reportedly headed for a $150 million opening weekend from July 19th-21st.
That number is expected to fluctuate, most likely increase, in weeks to come as Disney ramps up its short-term marketing push. Advanced ticket sales have been massive for the title, outpacing all the other live-action Disney adaptations and behind only “Avengers: Endgame” in terms of advanced tickets for 2019 movies.
The cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyonce as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, and Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa.
Favreau’s “The Jungle Book” launched in 2016 to a $103 million domestic opening ahead of a $966 million worldwide haul. 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” had the biggest opening weekend so far of a Disney live-action adaptation with $174 million.
