Keanu Reeves is reportedly circling the main role in a new LEGO movie at Universal Pictures.
Filmmaker Josh Cooley will helm the project, reuniting with Reeves after the pair worked together on “Toy Story 4”.
The project will reportedly be a “live-action/CG hybrid” feature, and it’s not clear if Reeves will appear on screen or simply voice a character.
Other cast members, story details or other key hires are also under wraps.
Universal acquired the film rights to Lego in 2020, but several live-action projects have stalled in development, and the studio needs to commission a movie in the next six months or lose its rights to the property.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s “The Lego Movie” was a smash at Warner Bros. Pictures, and its follow-up, “The Lego Batman Movie,” was another hit. Two further films fizzled, and Warners let the rights expire.
Universal’s first collaboration with LEGO was the Pharrell Williams biopic “Piece by Piece,” which was a disaster, grossing just $10 million.
