Back in 2024 came the news that “The Invite” and “Celeste and Jesse Forever” scribes Rashida Jones & Will McCormack were writing a new “Tom and Jerry” feature-length movie at Warner Bros. Animation.
Now, with “The Invite” hitting cinemas and the Annency Animation Festival underway, the pair have spoken some more about the film which sees the return of the iconic cat and mouse duo.
The story reportedly sees Tom and Jerry being rescued by human do-gooders who eventually fall in love. The pets then launch campaigns to destroy each other and the romantic bond between their human owners.
McCormack, who won a Best Short Film Oscar in 2021, tells Variety that it’s essentially a relationship comedy:
“Tom and Jerry do whatever they can to kill the other or to break up [their owners]. It’s a rom-com in the style of ‘La La Land’. Why are these characters fighting so much? Because they want to be seen, and they want to be loved. The logline of our film is literally ‘Love is worth fighting for.'”
The last major “Tom and Jerry” film was a 2021 live action/3D animated hybrid film starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Michael Pena.
