As expected, Kane Parsons “Backrooms” movie is ruling the domestic box-office in its debut this weekend.
The title’s Friday takings saw it bag $38.4 million in its first day haul (with previews). Projections for its debut weekend are now hovering in the high $80 million mark domestically.
That’s easily the biggest opening weekend to date for an A24 film, and a bigger opening than the $81.6 million that last week’s “Star Wars” film, “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” opened to.
What’s remarkable here is that the film has come in at a budget of $10 million, while the marketing spend is said to be at a comparable level, thanks to a curated campaign targeting online.
The film, which nabbed a weak B- CinemaScore, is also opening in around 50 external markets this weekend, where it is currently estimated to snag a further $36 million.
Curry Barker’s “Obsession” is set to once again actually go up, not down, in its third weekend of release with an increase of 19% to a $28.5 million second-place haul. By end of Sunday, the $1 million budget film will have earned over $106 million domestically.
“The Mandalorian and Grogu” is looking to fall at least 69% to $25 million in its second weekend – the worst second weekend drop to date for a “Star Wars” movie. It’s still coming in behind “Solo” with a $137.3 million total haul by end of Sunday expected.
“The Breadwinner” and “Pressure” took in $7.5 million and $5.4 million respectively in 5th and 7th place.
