There was rumor, but now Robert De Niro is in negotiations to join Joaquin Phoenix in the “Joker” stand-alone film at Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films.
Phoenix is portraying the DC Comics villain in a moderately budgeted and darker take on the material that’s separate to the linked universe of DC-based films like “Man of Steel” and “Wonder Woman”.
All the DC films seem to be a part of ‘Worlds of DC’, the new official branding revealed at Comic-Con which Warners apparently has given their various DC films.
Phoenix is starring as the iconic Batman villain in the “Joker” movie which “The Hangover” helmer Todd Phillips is directing from a script he’s co-written with Scott Silver. The project, set in Gotham City in the early 1980s, would mark De Niro’s first comic book movie.
If a deal is closed, De Niro would reportedly play a talk show host who is somehow instrumental in the Joker’s origin. Filming is slated to begin this September in New York.
