“Ant-Man” actor David Dastmalchian has closed a deal to star in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” taking on the role of obscure comic book villain Polka-Dot Man in the project at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Polka-Dot Man is a low-level crook who tried to make a name for himself with spot-themed crimes and a costume that included gimmicks like spots that transform into buzzsaws and lethal discs. Gunn’s take on the character is said to lean into his embarrassment of his ‘lame’ abilities.
Dastmalchian has appeared in DC projects before including Chris Nolan’s “The Dark Knight,” guest starring on The CW’s “The Flash” and having a several episode arc on FOX’s “Gotham”. This marks the second major new casting addition following that of Idris Elba in a key yet to be revealed role. The pair mark two of the five major new characters in the squad – the other three being Ratcatcher, Peacemaker and King Shark.
Gunn is writing and directing the film which is currently in pre-production ahead of a shoot this Fall. The project isn’t so much a straight sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 film as a ‘new take’ on the property. That said, several actors are reprising their roles including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang. Viola Davis is also rumored to be returning as Amanda Waller.
Dastmalchian is a frequent collaborator with Denis Villeneuve and is currently playing Piter De Vries in the big-budget adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel “Dune”. He previously worked with Gunn on “The Belko Experiment “.
