Previously, filmmaker Christopher Nolan revealed that his upcoming film adaptation of Homer’s “The Odyssey” would clock in at a runtime under the 180 minutes of “Oppenheimer”.
That appears to be true if a new listing on AMC’s official site (via WoR) is correct. The exhibitor has indicated the film will have an official runtime of 2 hours 52 minutes (172 minutes).
That would be Nolan’s second-longest film and just ahead of “Interstellar” (2 hours 49 minutes), “The Dark Knight Rises” (2 hours 44 minutes), and “The Dark Knight” (2 hours 32 minutes)
The runtime talk comes as actress Lupita Nyong’o has addressed the racist backlash to her casting as Helen of Troy in the film. Speaking with Elle, the actress says: “This is a mythological story. I’m very supportive of Chris’ intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling. Our cast is representative of the world. I’m not spending my time thinking of a defense. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not.”
Nyong’o says her interpretation of the character goes deeper than Helen’s beauty: “You can’t perform beauty. I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks? That’s the thing about doing such a well-known text, which has been studied and interpreted and derived from. The research could be endless. The good thing about working with a writer like Chris is that it’s on the page. The investigation starts with the pages you’re given. That’s what I based it on.”
The first major budget feature shot entirely on IMAX film, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Tom Holland star in “The Odyssey” which opens in cinemas on July 17th.
