Filmmaker Steven Spielberg is reportedly planning to start filming his first true western movie next year.
That’s the reveal in a new THR feature piece on celebrated cinematographer Janusz Kamiński who scored the Visionary Cinematographer Award at Camerimage.
Kamiński, who has been Spielberg’s go-to lenser for years, reportedly confirmed his next job is that Spielberg western which is aiming to shoot in 2027.
Speaking with the trade, Kamiński says he’s pulling from his own past for some of the imagery which could differentiate it from some American-shot westerns:
“We used to go to this region in the Sudeten Mountains, where it was just beautiful, rolling hills, looked like parts of Montana. The lay of the land, the snow on the ground, the fog.
Those who shoot American movies tend to come from somewhere else, and we see these same things differently. That’s why there’s room in this profession for men and women from different countries who bring different aesthetics to American movies”
Currently untitled, nothing is known about the film beyond the genre and Spielberg’s desire to avoid tropes or stereotypes. He also previously teased that it ‘kicks ass’. Spielberg’s most recent film was “Disclosure Day” earlier this year.
