HBO has landed the upcoming new limited series take on “The Birds” which was first reported back in May.
Emmy-winning “Succession” star Sarah Snook is set to star in the project dubbed a “visceral, present-day reimagining” of both the original Daphne du Maurier gothic horror novella and the very loose film adaptation by Alfred Hitchcock back in 1963.
Escaping a bitter custody battle, Myra Massey (Snook) returns home to her isolated Alaskan hometown with her young daughter, secretly probing a childhood friend’s suspicious disappearance.
With a killer on the loose and personal threats mounting, Myra fights to protect her daughter against a terrifying new menace: vicious, deadly bird attacks inexplicably tied to the crime.
Now, Myra isn’t just trying to close a case, she’s fighting to survive in a place where death lurks in both the shadows and the skies.
That bears little resemblance to the original short story, which was essentially a self-contained and almost apocalyptic ‘home invasion’ piece set in Cornwall, while the Hitchcock film took place in Bodega Bay, California.
“The Leftovers” and HBO’s “Watchmen” writer Tom Spezialy is penning the new series, which hails from Universal International Studios and David Heyman’s Heyday Television.
Spezialy, Snook, Heyman, Danny Samit, and Jennifer Gabler Rawlings all executive produce. Several attempts have been made to adapt the novella over the years, with both a Naomi Watts-led film in 2007 and a BBC series in 2017 failing to make it out of development.
