After first being announced back in late 2024, the upcoming “Star Wars” film trilogy being penned by Simon Kinberg may now have finally landed a director.
In a posting on X (via SHH), journalist Caleb Williams says: “A director has been found for the new #StarWars trilogy by screenwriter Simon Kinberg. Kinberg wasn’t considered.”
The scooper did not specify which helmer they’ve heard has landed the gig, but do add: “production is picking up steam FAST and could begin filming as early as next year.”
There has been no confirmation from either Lucasfilm or the trades that the films have moved beyond the development stage, let alone secured a director.
Kinberg is best known for his work on the scripts for films like Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes,” Doug Liman’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “Jumper,” Josh Trank’s 2015 “Fantastic Four,” and multiple “X-Men” films as well as creating “Star Wars: Rebels”.
He’s also a prolific producer on films like “Logan,” “Deadpool” and “The Martian” with recent works including Apple TV’s “Sugar” and Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man” film. As a director, however, his two films “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” and “The 355” were critical and commercial flops.
The new trilogy is expected to take place after the events of the Skywalker Saga, as does the next theatrical release with Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter” opening in May.
