After six weeks in the top spot, and nearly being dethroned by “The Odyssey” last weekend, Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has finally left the box-office top spot.
The Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman-led mystical sequel “Practical Magic 2” has become No.1 with the film pulling in $13 million on Friday and a $30 million total for the weekend domestically.
That’s notably up on the $13 million the original 1998 film opened to, that film famously bombed at the time but subsequently achieved cult classic status after it was released on home video.
Both it and the Andrew Garfield-led “The Uprising” arrived this weekend, with that movie not faring so well at just $1.38 million on Friday and $3.1 million estimated for the weekend, debuting in ninth place.
The Gal Gadot-led “Runner” is in second with an estimated $2.5 million on Friday and $6 million over the three-day period.
Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” came in third place on Friday with $2.06 million and is expected to hit $8.1 million by Sunday. Domestically, it’s up to $601 million and worldwide it now stands at $1.68 billion – making it the highest-grossing film in the history of Universal Pictures.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” may have fallen to fourth on Friday, but it’s still strong with $2 million for the day ahead of an expected $8.5 million by Sunday. If that estimate holds, its domestic total will be $935.27 million, pushing it past “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to be the biggest domestic-grossing film of all time.
“Coyote vs. Acme” came in fifth, with the title pulling in an estimated $6.3 million for the weekend, which will bring its domestic total to $47.8 million through three weekends.
