Earlier this year came the news that “Saturday Night” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” director Jason Reitman had become attached to a live-action four-quadrant family film adaptation of the famed “Astro Boy” manga and anime franchise.
The project would’ve reunited Reitman with his “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” director Gil Kenan. It was set up at Sony Pictures, and writers were being sought.
Now though, The Insneider reports that the film “will not be moving forward at Sony”.
He adds it could be revived by someone else down the line, but this was such a passion project for Reitman that it’s unlikely.
Osamu Tezuka penned and illustrated the original manga in the 1950s and 1960s, which was turned into three different anime series – the most notable being the 1980 version, which ran for 52 episodes and proved a major hit in Australia.
Imagi Animation Studios and Summit Entertainment released an animated “Astro Boy” movie in 2009.
