On Thursday came the surprise news that Marvel Studios had abruptly cancelled its critically acclaimed “Wonder Man” TV series, despite having renewed the series for a second season back in March.
Additionally, the show’s writers had been released to pursue other projects. The news left quite a few people reeling as it was unexpected. Speculation quickly arose as to why.
In order to quell that speculation, showrunner Andrew Guest took to TikTok to explain that the news was just as much a surprise to him as everyone else:
“This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works. And Destin’s schedule – no one’s schedule was an issue. Yahya [Abdul-Mateen II], Destin [Daniel Cretton], Sir Ben [Kingsley] and I all loved making this show, all felt passionately about continuing to do it, and were eager to.
Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared, writers room was supposed to start this month, production was supposed to begin early next year.
And there was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did, and that’s essentially all I really know. Numbers aren’t really shared with me.”
Guest also noted that he had written the first episode of Season 2, and he had an outline for where the season would go – one that those involved “felt really good about it”.
Yahya Abdul Mateen II and Ben Kingsley starred in the series as Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery, respectively with Abdul-Mateen earning an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series. The show premiered on January 27th.
