In the last few days, the studio and trades were predicting a $190 million domestic opening weekend for Sony & Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” while online box-office trackers were suggesting $300+ million.
The latter is now looking more likely as Thursday night preview figures are out with the film taking in $74.5 million for the half-day alone according to EmpireCityBo.
That’s the biggest Thursday night preview take ever, surpassing “Avengers: Endgame,” with domestic opening weekend estimates now rising to $350 million or more.
A lot will depend on how big the drop-off is between Friday and Saturday, as many wonder how front-loaded the movie will be.
Still, the film could potentially smash the “Avengers: Endgame” all-time opening weekend domestically ($357 million), though it isn’t expected to do so worldwide ($1.224 billion).
The other good news is audiences are very happy with the film, the title snagging an ‘A’ CinemaScore in exit polls along with a 98% (4.8/5) score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
