“V for Vendetta” HBO Series Hits A Wall

Warner Bros. Pictures

Last year came the news that a TV series adaptation of Alan Moore’s iconic 1982 comic “V for Vendetta” was in development at HBO and Warner Bros. Television.

BAFTA Award-nominated Pete Jackson (“The Death of Bunny Munro”) was attached to write the series adaptation while James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios were to executive produce along with Ben Stephenson and Leanne Klein.

Now, The InSneider is reporting that the project has stalled:

“I’m now told that HBO has passed on Jackson’s script. One source told me that Jackson delivered a period-themed take on the material, while HBO was curious to see what a more modern take on a political anarchist might look like.”

An HBO insider adds that while Jackson’s take was shot down, it doesn’t stop the series from being “redeveloped with another writer down the line.” While it may come back, others see this as the project effectively being killed.

The origincsl comic is set in Britain in a dystopian near future in which the country is controlled by the fascist Norsefire party.

An anarchist named V, known for his distinctive Guy Fawkes mask, seeks to topple the government with the help of Evey Hammond, a young woman V rescued from the country’s secret police.

The property was famously adapted into the well-received James McTeigue-directed and The Wachowskis-produced 2005 film adaptation starring Hugo Weaving as V and Natalie Portman as Evey. A cinematic re-release of that film will take place in November.
