Netflix has set an October 30th theatrical release followed by a November 25th streaming premiere for Peter Berg’s new film “The Mosquito Bowl”. The cinema rollout will be in select AMC theatres along with additional locations across the country for award eligibility.
It marks a rare Netflix-AMC partnership, the first since “KPop Demon Hunters” was released.
The film follows four of America’s most celebrated 1940s college football players who enlist in the Marines after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
As they train for the brutal invasion of Okinawa on the island of Guadalcanal, they take part in a legendary football game featuring some of the greatest players in college football history. Of the 65 players, 15 died within a year.
Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis play the quartet in the film based on Pulitzer Prize winner Buzz Bissinger’s bestseller. Berg and Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”) adapted the screenplay.
Netflix has multiple films expected to be up for awards contention, including Los Javis’ “La Bola Negar” and David Fincher’s “The Adventures of Cliff Booth.” Berg is next slated to direct the “Call of Duty” film, which he’ll co-write with Taylor Sheridan.
