“Supergirl” To Lose Warners $100 Million?

Warner Bros. Pictures

It has only been out for one weekend, but already the post-mortem reports for the “Supergirl” film have begun.

The film’s opening has been seen as a misfire, with $38 million in North America and $68 million globally in its opening weekend.

Variety indicates that the film is currently projected to finish its theatrical run with a gross of $100 million domestically and $200-210 million globally, and it would require a decent hold to hit those numbers.

If it does, the trade alleges the film would lose the studio around $100-120 million theatrically. A source familiar with the financials claims the losses are closer to $80-85 million at that amount. If it goes below $200 million, the write-down will be bigger.

The trade says the studio’s cost comes in at $170 million to produce and around $120 million to market, but sources continue to stress that the film’s breakeven number is around $300 million and acknowledge is a much lower one that most films of this size

How is it that low? They say because the film’s cast and creatives don’t have backend deals, so no one is getting first-dollar grosses. Even Milly Alcock, who plays the title role, got paid around $400,000 for her work.

It continues a bad run for Warner Bros. following the bomb “The Bride!,” and only modest performers like “Wuthering Heights” and “Mortal Kombat II” – a far cry from their stellar 2025 run.
