For several years now, “Euphoria” actress Sydney Sweeney has been attached to star in and executive produce a new take on sci-fi heroine “Barbarella” at Sony Pictures and TriStar.
Based on both Jean Claude Forest’s French comic and the cult 1968 film adaptation starring Jane Fonda, the last update came in 2024 when filmmaker Edgar Wright (“The Running Man”) was attached to direct from a script co-written by Jane Goldman and Honey Goldman.
Things have been dead quiet since then, so much so some believed it may have been scrapped. That’s not the case according to Deadline which says the film is still moving forward.
Sweeney has formed a new production company, Honey Trap, which has set a new first-look deal with Sony. As a result, the new “Barbarella” is “still moving forward” and Sweeney is “already working” on it under the new deal.
The original film followed a female astronaut from the future who is sent on a mission to find and stop an evil scientist, Dr. Durand Durand, whose invention could spell the destruction of the galaxy.
The film is famous for its sexual elements, psychedelic design and campy tone. Fonda was asked a while back if she thought a remake could work, she said: “I try not to [think about it], because I worry about what it’s going to be.”
