Marvel Studios’ “Wonder Man” director Destin Daniel Cretton, head writer Andrew Guest and leading man Yahya Abdul-Mateen II recently spoke with THR, reflecting on the surprise big success of the series.
One of the biggest reasons for the show’s embrace is that it doesn’t follow the Marvel Studios formula – stakes are small, effects are minimal, pacing is on the slower side, and the title was built on both being an entertainment industry satire and a two-hand character study.
The result was a series built on chemistry, fun and smarts, with the writing and performances doing all the heavy lifting. Critics’ scores are among some of the best for an MCU work, while some fans grumbled as they wanted something punchier.
Now, Guest confirms that the second season is now being written, and those hoping it will turn into more of a conventional superhero series are going to be let down. He explains the aim is to keep doing what the first season did best, keeping the focus on character:
“The people who like this show and like it because it feels different are going to be rewarded, and the people who think that this show is going to suddenly turn into something else, I’m sorry to say, it’s not. Simon still has superpowers. It is still about this relationship, about two artists, and our industry. That is essentially what we want to maintain.”
Just when a second season might hit screens isn’t clear. An official renewal was handed out in March – a full two years after the first season wrapped filming back in March 2024. Presumably, Marvel will aim to begin shooting either later this year or early 2027.
