“The Devil Wears Prada 2” sashayed across the global box-office this weekend, the title raking in $77 million domestically and $156 million overseas for a stunning debut of $234 million worldwide.
That’s well ahead of expectations overseas, as international markets were only expected to do around $100 million according to early projections.
The film has smashed a number of records, starting with being the second-best start for an MPA title this year behind only “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”.
It’s also the highest opening weekend ever for a Meryl Streep film, either domestically or overseas, and the same goes for an Emily Blunt film. The title has already earned 72% of the total haul of the original film.
Meanwhile, Antoine Fuqua’s “Michael” had a very strong second weekend – the title garnering $54 million domestically and $80.8 million overseas for a worldwide take of $134.8 million.
That’s a domestic drop of just 44%, indicating the film wasn’t front-loaded as some suspected.
It also brings its current worldwide total up to $423.9 million after just ten days, making it the second-highest-grossing post-COVID Lionsgate title behind only “John Wick: Chapter 4” which it will pass this week.
Domestically, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” with $12.1 million was in third, followed by “Project Hail Mary” with $8.6 million in fourth with their total grosses at $894 million and $639 million respectively. A number of smaller newcomers arrived with “Hokum” debuting in fifth with $6.4 million, “Animal Farm” in sixth with $3.4 million, and “Deep Water” in eighth with $2.4 million.
