Streep: Marvel-izing Movies Is ‘So Boring’

Meryl Streep says the impact of successful superhero movies on films outside the genre has caused characters in films to become ‘so boring’ these days.

The Oscar winner was interviewed alongside Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt on Hits Radio Breakfast Show and was asked about this weekend’s “The Devil Wears Prada 2” showcasing a softer side to Streep’s Miranda Priestly character.

Streep responded by talking about how it gives the audience a more true-to-life version of a character and how movies in general seem to be moving away from showing off shades of grey in their heroes and villains thanks to the impact of Marvel movies and the like:

“I feel like you get a realistic view. I think we tend to Marvel-ize the movies now. We got the villains and we got the good guys, and it’s so boring. What’s really interesting about life is that some of the heroes are flawed and some of the villains are human and interesting and have their own strengths. So that’s what I like about this [movie]. It’s messier.”

Streep was then asked if her character would ever use AI, to which she said no as “she has assistants to do such work for her”.

Streep recently revealed she doubled her salary on the first film by originally turning down the iconic role: “I’m 50-60 [years old] — it took me this long to understand that I could do that! They needed me, I felt. I was ready to retire. That was a lesson.”
