Don’t expect another writer’s strike anytime soon.

The Writers Guild of America famously went on strike in 2023 for five months, with a three-year deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) finally reached later that year.

Now, with that deal set to expire in just under a month, the Guild has reached a tentative agreement with the studios (whom the AMPTP represent) on Saturday – the new one set to run for a slightly longer four years.

Details of the deal aren’t forthcoming as yet, but are expected to include a major cash infusion into the guild’s health fund. The union also sought improvements on 2023’s gains such as AI, streaming residuals and TV staffing minimums.

Global contraction in the industry has led to a distinct lake of desire for a strike this time around, but the deal must still be approved by the WGA board and sent to members for ratification.

The AMPTP still must reach deals with SAG-AFTRA and the Directors Guild of America – both of which see their current deals expire on June 30th.
