“Super Mario Galaxy Movie” Targets $350M Debut

Universal Pictures, Illumination, Nintendo

Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo’s “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is launching worldwide on April 1st and box-office revenue projections for its performance over the Easter Holiday are huge.

According to Deadline, not only is the title targeting a $175 million North American haul over the Wednesday-Sunday five-day period but the title is reportedly on track to pull in a further $175 million from 79 markets overseas.

That will bring its likely debut up to $350 million worldwide, and that doesn’t include Japan, where the film won’t open until April 24th. It also could be underestimating things if pre-sales are anything to go by.

Advance ticket sales in the U.S. are slightly ahead of the first 2023 movie which opened over a Wednesday-Sunday Easter stretch to a three-day domestic opening of $146.1 million and a five-day one of $204.6 million.

Universal isn’t ready to call a $200+ million domestic weekend yet but many suspect that will be the case. If so, that would push it above the $377.2 million five-day worldwide opening of the first film.

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” will easily the biggest domestic and worldwide openings of the year, though overseas it might not top Chinese film “Pegasus 3” which pulled in $152 million in three days (its first five-day haul is unknown).

The only other opener is “The Drama” which stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson and is looking to open around $15 million. Neither ‘Mario’ or ‘Drama’ have reviews out.
