“Hoppers” Hopping, “Bride” Jilted At Box-Office

Pixar’s “Hoppers” is in cinemas and is currently on track for a domestic opening of around $40 million – a big win for original animation.

Landing very positive critical reviews, and an ‘A’ CinemaScore from audience exit polls, it’s expected that the film will keep performing strongly for the rest of the month.

It’s certainly faring far better than Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride” which is debuting in third place with around $8-10 million for the weekend – not a good start for an $80+ million budget feature.

Combined with mixed critical reviews and a flat-out bad ‘C+’ CinemaScore from audiences, it’s expected that this will disappear fairly quickly. It marks a rare misfire for WB of late, who have had a decent track record with auteur-driven fare like “Wuthering Heights” last month which is still in there in fifth place this weekend.

Paramount’s “Scream 7” slips to second place in its second week, the title expected to pull in $16.3 million – a rather disastrously large 74% second weekend drop. That huge opening-weekend surge seems to have been limited specifically to that launch.

In fourth place is the animated film “Goat”, which earned a further $6.1 million in its fourth weekend.

Next weekend is quiet with the teen romance drama “Reminders of Him” and several indie films like “The Gates” and “Bodycam” opening, while Netflix will run the first two episodes of the second season of its live-action “One Piece” in cinemas.
