The other month, filmmaker Shawn Levy said his main goal with the upcoming Ryan Gosling-led “Star Wars: Starfighter” film is to do something ‘fresh’ with the franchise.
The project has been dubbed an ‘all-new standalone adventure’ which takes us further into the future than the franchise has gone before – around five years after the defeat of Palpatine and the First Order in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”.
The story is rumoured to see Gosling’s character protecting Flynn Grey’s young character as he sets out on a mission to transport the kid somewhere safe. This has led to speculation that the ‘safe’ will be a new Jedi Academy run by Rey (Daisy Ridley), who would theoretically cameo.
The film’s writer Jonathan Tropper has now debunked that rumour, telling Screen Rant one of the key elements of the film is that the characters here are entirely new to the world and fan service is pretty much off the table:
“Obviously, lightsabers are a part of that universe and that part of that galaxy. I’m so careful not to reveal anything, but essentially, I think it’s known that we have no legacy characters. You’re not going to see any of the characters you’ve seen in the other movies. So there are certain things that are still hallmarks of Star Wars that it’s good to have in there. But more than that, I can’t say.”
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson matched Levy’s sentiment about ‘freshness’ at Sundance on the weekend, telling Variety: “As a Star Wars fan, the most exciting thing for me is always seeing when they bring in fresh voices and fresh filmmakers to come in and tell new stories in that world.”
Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams co-star in the film, which is currently on track to hit cinemas on May 28th 2027.
