James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” looks set to win the weekend the world over with $88 million domestically and $345 million worldwide – the second highest global opening of the year behind only “Zootopia 2”.
Also telling is that the Sunday drop looks to be 18%, the same percentage drop “Avatar: The Way of Water” had between its second and third entries even as the overall total is down considerably (“Way of Water” debuted to $134 million).
It’s estimated that 5.2 million people saw the third “Avatar” on its opening weekend domestically compared to 8.7 million for the second.
“Zootopia 2,” meanwhile, is now up to $1.27 billion worldwide and has now pushed Disney past the $6 billion mark this year. Domestically it came in fifth this weekend with a further $14.5 million.
Faith-based “David” took second place with $22 million, Sydney Sweeney-led dark comedy/thriller “The Housemaid” was third with $19 million, and the new “SpongeBob” film was fourth with $16 million.
Universal’s titles are sinking – both “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” and “Wicked: For Good” are in sixth and seventh with $7.3 million and $4.3 million, respectively – meaning they can’t hit PVOD fast enough at this point.
In limited release, “Marty Supreme” managed to break records – coming in ninth overall at the box-office with $875,000 despite being on only six screens. The result is a stunning per-screen average of $145,000 – the best in years and the highest for a platform release since “La La Land” in 2016 – with the film going wide this coming week.
