Producer Simon Farnaby has had to clear up some confusion caused by his own comments in regards to a sequel to Paul King’s 2023 movie musical “Wonka”.
Timothée Chalamet led the prequel to Roald Dahl’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and its assorted film adaptations. It grossed $634.5 million off a $125 million budget and ultimately was the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2023.
So it came as little surprise that a follow-up was given the green light shortly after. King confirmed that the script was being written back in late 2024 and reports emerged this past April that the film would begin shooting in August ahead of a December 2027 release.
Then came an interview with Farnaby in Variety this week where he seemed to indicate the film was “delayed indefinitely” with it coming down to Chalamet’s schedule: “He wants to do one, but he’s not sure about timing or what he wants to do next.”
A Warner’s spokesperson denied the claim, saying: “Reports suggesting a ‘Wonka 2’ delay are entirely false. The ‘Wonka’ creative team is hard at work on the next chapter.”
Now, Farnaby has taken to social media with a posting on X saying:
“Hi all, just wanted to clear up some rumours about Wonka 2 after my Variety interview. My quotes were taken little out of context by some people. I 100% did not say Wonka 2 wasn’t happening. A sequel was always the plan. Everyone is working really hard on it. WB are committed. There is a great script by Paul and I. Timmy wants to do it (like I said!) it’s just about working out schedules and making sure it’s as fantastic as we know it can be – and these things take a little time. Very sorry for any confusion!
Chalamet will be out promoting in “Dune: Part Three” in December and has a voice role in the animated sci-fi feature “Not Alone”.
