Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has finally revealed the films he considers the twenty best of the 21st century, and today he’s revealed his numbers 1 through 10.
Inspired by The Big Picture podcast’s 25 best films of the century list, Tarantino guested on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, where he’s been explaining his choices
One caveat is that only one film is allowed per director. The list here avoids some of the more cliché picks for best films of the past 25 years in favour of personal favourites that he found entertaining.
The #1-10 list is as follows:
1. Black Hawk Down
2. Toy Story 3
3. Lost in Translation
4. Dunkirk
5. There Will Be Blood
6. Zodiac
7. Unstoppable
8. Mad Max: Fury Road
9. Shaun of the Dead
10. Midnight in Paris
Ridley Scott’s war action feature topped the list, coming in just ahead of Pixar’s “Toy Story 3” and Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation”. Plenty of master filmmakers are here including Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, Paul Thomas Anderson, George Miller, Tony Scott, Edgar Wright and Woody Allen.
Describing his choices, Tarantino says: “What is iconic to me, what is memorable to me, rather than to match wits with the Arthurs of the world, it’s these experiences. The idea was I didn’t look up anything, I just picked 20 movies straight from my brain, and if I couldn’t remember it, then it doesn’t make it. It had to be memorable. There’s a big thing about the filmmaking. Most of them have aggressive filmmaking. I’m impressed by that.”
