Ryan Coogler On Why He’s Rebooting “X-Files”

“Sinners” filmmaker Ryan Coogler is currently developing a reboot of “The X-Files” franchise for television.

Coogler has been attached to write the pilot, executive produce, and potentially direct the new take on the iconic 1990s series for a while now.

In a new interview with Variety, Coogler said one of his biggest motivations for this reboot is due to his mother being a big fan of the original series:

“Like my relationship with Rocky with my dad, The X-Files is one of those things with my mom. My mom means the world to me – she’s actually here tonight – so this is a big one for me. I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She’s fired up.”

Acclaimed actress Danielle Deadwyler (“Carry-On,” “I Saw The TV Glow”) has recently been linked as one of the leads in the show. Cooger was asked about her potential involvement to which he said: “I can neither confirm or deny”.

He gave the same response when asked whether original series stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson would return to reprise their roles of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

The original series followed their two characters who investigated unsolved cases featuring paranormal phenomena ranging from a global conspiracy involving alien colonisation to more monster-of-the-week events. 218 episodes were produced in total across eleven seasons, while two feature films were also made.

The comments come as “Sinners” is being re-released for Halloween in select IMAX theaters from October 30th-November 5th.
